What Are Cigarette Filters?
A cigarette filter is a small attachment (or holder) placed at the end of a cigarette to trap a portion of the tar, nicotine and particulates in the smoke before they reach your mouth. Add-on filters are different from the built-in foam tip on a manufactured cigarette: they add a second stage of filtration and are especially popular with hand-rolled and tube cigarettes.
Note: No cigarette filter makes smoking safe. Filters are designed to reduce certain components of smoke; the only way to eliminate the risks of smoking is to quit.
Types of Cigarette Filters
2-Stage Plastic Filters
The most common add-on filter. A plastic micro-chamber captures tar and condensate in two stages. Affordable, disposable, and widely used for daily smoking.
Activated-Charcoal Filters
Use activated carbon to adsorb more gas-phase compounds and smooth the taste. Often a bit pricier; preferred by smokers who want a cleaner draw.
Slim (6mm) vs Regular (8mm)
Filters are sized to your cigarette. 8mm fits standard/regular cigarettes; 6mm fits slim cigarettes. Using the right diameter prevents air leaks and a loose fit.
Disposable vs Reusable
Disposable filters are swapped every few cigarettes; reusable holders are cleaned and used long-term. Disposables are simplest; reusables can be cheaper per use.
